Heartbreaking news about Miracle. While we’re sad that he’s no longer with us we’re glad he is no longer in pain and suffering. Sometimes our roll in rescue is to love them and let them go.

From Melanie DeAeth:

It is with the greatest sadness that I’m letting you know that Miracle lost his battle today. With the leg injury the way it was he had to have time lying down to rest but every time he’d lie down the wounds on his side got worse. They went from raw, brush burn type injuries to full blown ulcers going down to the bone. When we started seeing the joint moving inside the wound and the ribs exposed on his side we knew we were nearing the end of the battle. We helped Miracle get up one more time with the sling and were hopeful when he stood but after evaluating the injuries and the progression of the wounds we knew that we would only torture this boy if we let him lie down one more time and it was torture for him not to be able to lie down and relieve the pain in his leg. We could have left him in a sling but doing that puts pressure on the wounds on his side too. So, with heavy heart I’m letting you know that Miracle, the special boy we have been praying for, enjoyed a great big meal of alfalfa and all the grain he could gobble. During that time he forgot about the pain and enjoyed life. I’m thankful we were able to give him that. I also know that our prayers were heard because this boy was riddled with pain but every time we prayed and asked him to stand and fight he did. He heard our prayers. I have always believed in prayer but now I believe even more and I know first hand how strong the power of prayer is. Thank you for your prayers, for your support and for your donations. Thanks to all of you Miracle left this earth knowing love with a full belly and a heart full of our prayers. Rescue networking works! Never give up!

September 22, 2016

This is Miracle, the horse that was rescued on Sunday, September 18, 2016. He was dehydrated and near death when a rescuer saw him and posted a plea on Facebook. After hundreds of shares and comments another rescuer showed up with a trailer and loaded him up and drove him to a vet on an emergency call. When I first spoke to the vet he wasn’t feeling very optimistic. Miracle was flat out and would not get up off his side. Dr. Joe from Brazos Valley Equine Hospital was preparing us for the worst but hoping for the best. Our response was to go back to the amazing group of people who joined forces to save him and ask for prayers. Hundreds of rescuers prayed that night and then, to our great relief, we were told that he was up on Monday morning! Miracle is still in the vet as of today and the bill is already up to $2000. He has infections from the back leg wounds and abrasions down is side and on his face. The eye on the side with wounds is being treated but the other eye is bright and alert.

He went back down on Wednesday, September 21 and back on IV fluids but recovered and got back up later that same day.

This is a story of how rescue networking saves lives. If not for the people who responded, he would have died where he lie. Please join us in prayer for full recovery for this sweet horse.

If you’d like to donate to help us pay his vet bill. Use the paypal link on True Blue Animal Rescue’s Facebook page or go to www.t-bar.org and use the paypal link there. If you’d prefer to send a donation in the mail send checks to True Blue Animal Rescue, PO Box 1107, Brenham, TX 77833

Thanks to those who have donated! We’ve gotten $275 donated so far.

Here is Miracle today, Day 4. The side that he was dragged on has horrible wounds all over it as does the side of his face. The wound on his leg cut through his flesh all the way around and stopped circulation. That’s coming back but the skin will slough off as it heals. He’s a young horse, extremely emaciated and completely defeated. He has probably not had many kind interactions with humans nor experienced much joy in life. He has every reason to give up. He gave up the first night and again today. The vet said he just quit and lied down. They put him in a sling but he just hung there, defeated. That was when I asked you all for prayer. A couple of hours after we all began praying Miracle got back up! The vet said he was surprised. He didn’t expect him to get up. Then, our healing prayers gave him hope and he got up. I’m praying that he’ll keep fighting so we can show him love and joy and give him the good life he deserves. Keep praying! It’s working!

He’s back up again!

September 21, 2016

Calling all prayer warriors! Miracle is back down again! He’s getting fluids but not wanting to stand. We need everyone’s prayers and healing to help him regain his strength and will to live so he’ll get back up!

From Liz Keels on September 19, 2016:

He’s improving. Standing most of day on three legs. One leg is very swollen and needs some more TLC. Ulcer on right eye being treated (eye on the ground for extended period of time). Also, eating very well.

TBAR response September 18, 2016

We have been asked to help this horse. He is currently at Brazos Equine Vet Hospital and he his not getting up. He has had two bags of fluids and antibiotics and he’s not getting up. We need all prayer warriors to share and pray for this horse. Pray and send healing!

Original post from Liz Keels on September 18, 2016:

The Acres Homes horse that I assisted with is safe at the Brazos Valley Equine Specialist in Navasota. He was saved today by two bad ass woman! I couldn’t be there to witness him getting out but I am in awe of their determination! I’m glad I was at the right place at the right time and followed that dog home yesterday evening when my better judgment told me to keep driving… NEVER ?.

Thank you, Melanie Hewett-Deaeth & True Blue Animal Rescue for taking this guy under your wings. DONATIONS can be made to http://www.t-bar.org/.

The sores are from laying down in pain for hours and thrashing. I don’t know anything about horses so I am grateful for my best friend for heeding my 911 call yesterday. She also plans to help the finder learn all about horses, what to look for and how to help in his neighborhood.

Thank you everyone for your concern, shares, prayers!! Keep them coming!

Baby’s First Halter

TBAR-Baby-HalterLook who learned that a halter won’t hurt you him week? He followed Mama into the stall and then got surprised when Colton and Whitney got a halter on him. He was giving to pressure by the end of the lesson. Love this cute little guy!

Newest Rescue: Hitch (Horse)

TBAR-Newest-Rescue-Hitch

Please Welcome True Blue Animal Rescue’s newest intake. We named him Hitch because he was tied to a bumper hitch when we picked him up. He had no pasture turn out or shelter so he lived his life tied up. We would like to thank Deputy Wegner or Washington Co Sheriff’s Dept for calling us to pick him up when his owner decided that the best thing was to turn him over to rescue. Hitch will be placed for adoption as soon as he gains some weight!

Newest Rescue: Horses (Foster home needed)

TBAR-Newest-Rescue-Horses-April-2016

We all know there are stray dogs and cats in our communities but did you know there are also stray horses? These two horses are homeless and in need of a foster or adoptive home. They appear to be young. The darker one is soon to be gelded and the lighter one is a mare. They are both friendly and show great potential. True Blue Animal Rescue will cover the vet bills. All you need to provide is shelter, feed and love. Please contact us if you are interested in becoming a foster home. Email [email protected] or call 936-878-2349.

Foster Feature: Bambi

TBAR-Rehab-Dog-BambiThank you to Bambi’s foster mom for helping this sweet girl get healthy! Foster homes make all the difference.

“This is a before and today picture of Bambi.. she was the pup we found in a ditch cold and scared. She has come a long way but still has a bit to go. She is the sweetest dog in the world doesn’t bark or jump on the kids or anybody for that matter. SHe loves to be inside in her chair . She is going to be an amazing pet.” – Foster Mom

Thank you Deputy Hale!

TBAR-News-Austin-Co-HaleAustin County Deputy Nathan Hale saw these horses starving and immediately pulled them and brought them to safety. They went to court and had them awarded to rescue to guarantee their safety. They are now in foster homes, gaining weight and getting vet and farrier care. We cannot thank Austin County enough for caring about animals and working toward putting an end to abuse and neglect in their county.

Pet of the week: Binion (horse)

Binion-TBAR-Horse-AdoptableMeet Binion. This poor horse’s owner died and nobody knew he was there. When Austin Co. law enforcement saw him a family member was found so he could decide what to do. His options were, sending him to auction which would mean he’d end up at a kill pen, euthanasia, or rescue. That’s when we were contacted! Like most rescues our foster homes are full but how could we say no to this sweet horse. He is now being seen by a vet and preparing to go into a foster home.
This is only one of many other horses that need us so we need your help. If you are thinking about getting a horse but aren’t sure, become a foster home. We’ll support you by offering advice and providing vet care for the horse. You just provide food and love. As a foster home it’s not forever and we can get them moved to another foster or find them an adoptive home. Then again, if it works out and you decide to adopt, you have first option to do that!! You might not want to start with a horse that needs rehabilitation like Binion but we have LOTS of other wonderful horses that are healthy and evaluated and just need you! Take a look at our web site and see if there’s one you’d like to foster. Then email us at [email protected] and we’ll walk you through the approval process. It’s that easy! www.t-bar.org

Foster Feature: Winston Update #2

True-Blue-Animal-Rescue-Texas-Winston-Update-2We are pleased to share with you the latest update on Winston!

It’s been three weeks since Winston went into foster care with Kim and he’s doing very well. His wounds are healing and so is his heart. He is such a well behaved boy that his foster Mom feels sure he must have been someone’s beloved pet before he ended up on the streets and in the hands of people who were not so nice. What does that mean for Winston? It means he has some trust issues with people and other dogs but it also means he remembers the people who treated him well and he wants to trust again. Little by little he’s warming up and feeling safer and more secure. He’s learning to love life again and enjoys lying around, riding in the car and playing with toys again. He’s housebroken and crate trained and walks on a leash too! He’s never offered to hurt anyone or any other animals but his foster Mom monitors him with them all the time for now. Physically his wounds a closing and he’s even putting some pressure on his injured leg now. If you’ve been following Winston’s story keep praying for him to heal. He’ll be going to the vet soon for an update and some vaccinations. He wasn’t healthy enough for those three weeks ago but thanks to a wonderful foster Mom, he is now. Watch for updates after his vet visit giving us a go ahead to put him up for adoption!

Roman Update March 2015: Switch your Senior Animal to Senior Food

True-Blue-Animal-Rescue-Triple-Crown-Nutrition-Roman-Update-March-2015-2Roman is doing great on Triple Crown Senior!

Roman has now been on Triple Crown Senior feed for 5 weeks now and is showing great improvement. With all of the recent rainy weather, he has enjoyed rolling and getting all muddy. His foster home is suspicious that he does it on purpose because he knows he’ll get brushed afterwards and he enjoys all of the love and attention!

Since Roman is so large, and also so malnourished, he is fed a bit more than the recommended 6 pounds of senior feed per day (half in the morning, half at night). He is benefiting from the higher nutrient content to make up for his older (and less efficient) digestive system. Triple Crown Senior has a higher fat content for extra energy, enough bulk fiber to make up for any lack of hay or grass, and it is also softer, which makes it easier on Roman’s system. In addition to his Triple Crown Senior feed, Roman is also given quality hay, access to pasture grass and clean, fresh water.

Roman is doing great, but in honor of him, and every other animal in his situation, we’d like to take a moment to explain what you need to watch out for, and what you can do to help your horse as they get older! Before Roman got to the state he was in, he could have been identified as malnourished by early weight loss, topline muscle loss, graying of the coat, and hollowing of the grooves around his eyes, as well as decreased hoof and hair coat quality. The following three things should be done for each aging horse, to ensure they have the best quality of life in their senior years.

Teeth Floating

The tool used to smooth down your horse’s teeth is a file, called a float (hence the term, teeth floating). Horse teeth never stop growing, and over time they can become sharp and uneven or fractured, making it hard for them to chew and even causing discomfort and pain. In this situation it is hard for your horse to eat feed, grass, and hay, and you may notice quids around their eating area. Quidding is when your horse tries to eat hay, but can’t properly chew and swallow it, so they essentially just wad it up in their mouth and spit it out, leaving behind quids on the ground as evidence of the teeth issues.

You can feed your senior horse a mix of senior feed and water to make a mash that is easy for them to swallow and digest while you are waiting to get their teeth floated.

Get Bloodwork done

As horses age they become at risk for metabolic issues, such as Cushings. If your horse has hormone imbalances, or organ failure, the only way to tell for sure is to get bloodwork done by your veterinarian. When you are caring for your senior pets, bloodwork is an essential step before you simply switch them to senior feed and assume all will be well.

Switch Your Horse to Senior Feed

Giving your older horse more of the same feed isn’t the answer. The feed just goes through them without the proper digestion and nutrient absorption. Proof of this can be seen if you examine your horses manure and see undigested grain.

Senior feed is softer, making it more easily digestible, and it is also specially formulated with high-quality ingredients to make up for your senior horse’s decreased ability for nutrient absorption and digestion.

As your horse ages their bodies are less able to break down their food into the essential elements that they need for proper nutrition. Senior feed has extra high-quality vitamins and minerals, such as protein, fiber, and phosphorus, and calcium, which is easier for your senior horse’s body to process. Senior feed has high quality nutrients for better absorption, added vitamins for the immune system, and pre- and pro-biotics to help with digestive efficiency and overall health.

When is Your Horse a Senior?

Generally, 15 years and older is considered a senior horse, but it varies for each animal. The best person to advise you on what is best for your horse’s health is your veterinarian.

Foster Feature: Winston

Today’s foster feature is Winston. He wandered up to someone’s house hurt and confused. Thankfully the person who saw him sent a picture out to be networked on facebook to give him a chance. Some facebook networking friends started raising funds and searching for a foster home and rescue to take him in. Lucky for this guy, he found both. Now he has an approved foster home and True Blue Animal Rescue to provide rescue support so he’ll be protected and then networked for a new home. Right now he’s on antibiotics and wound care from his wonderful foster Mom who is also a nurse! Here’s an update from his foster Mom:

I am 1.5 to 2 years old per my doctor. I just want constant love and attention. I am a sucker for some belly rubs, Kraft cheese singles, baths; of course I love them and please don’t forget my rawhide bones, Kong ball and toys. This living in leisure is new to me but I sure do LOVE IT. I’m not too keen on other furry friends just yet. I will get better with my social skills; I just need time to know that I am not being under attack any longer. The couch is very comfortable but I also do like to resort to my fancy crate for long naps. I promise I go all on my own too. I am potty trained too! If I have to GO, I just ring the bells on the back door.

I am still recovering from all my boo boos, especially my back leg, with the help of my foster Momma and all the sweet ladies that I have interacted with these past 3 days, of course. Shhh …I think, they think I’m too cute for my own fur! I am…Ruff Woof!

As soon as Winston is healed he will be neutered, vaccinated and put on heartworm preventative and up for adoption.

Houston has a staggering number of strays and many are injured and have no hope. Thanks to social media and some big hearted people many find foster homes and are picked up by rescues. Foster homes are the the key but funding is just as important. The rescues that are taking these animals in are small with no funding other than donations. When the animal is injured and in need of more vet care than usual, donations make all the difference. Winston is thankful that a kind person called the vet and paid for his initial visit and the next visit too! That takes the pressure off the rescue and allows us to focus on the animal and not worry about funds. We cannot thank this kind hearted person enough!

In addition to direct payments to vets there are often giving or caring fund options to donate for the animal. My recommendation for those is not to donate to them but rather to wait till the rescue that picks up the dog posts their link and asks for donations to help care for the animal they have taken in. This will eliminate confusion with trying to find out who donated and how to thank them or how to get the funds transferred to the rescue. Comment and offer to donate but wait till the rescue asks for those funds. That way the funds will go directly into the rescue’s account to be used for the animal. In this case a private person set up the account and it took us days to find out who it was. She is now waiting for the funds to be transferred from the donation account so she can then transfer them to True Blue Animal Rescue. If you wanted to donate but were’t sure where, please donate through Paypal on our web site www.t-bar.org or directly from our face book page. That money goes directly into our account to be used to help Winston.

Thank you on behalf of Winston and the many other dogs we take in each week. True Blue Animal Rescue is a 501c3 non profit organization so all donations made directly to True Blue Animal Rescue or on a True Blue Animal Rescue vet bill account are tax deductible. You will always receive a letter for tax purposes when making a donation to True Blue Animal Rescue.
